I have some amazing memories of living in Ethiopia as a young teen - my parents were Peace Corps volunteers '70 thru '73.
This necklace is an expression of some of those memories...
The focal piece is a genuine, antique (nickel silver?)Coptic cross, it's etched pattern unique to the town or province in which it was made. These crosses have been traditionally worn since the 4th century by Ethiopian Coptic Christians as symbols of their faith. Copt is an ancient branch of Christianity.
The cross hangs from a band of (5)warm, red (5x7)mm coral nuggets, the necklace extending out to include:
(23)8mm rustic, green, coral and milk colored Peking glass beads.
(6) 18mm carnelian beads
(2) 15mm silver plated filigree cross beads
(14) (8x10)mm antique Ethiopian silver-over-brass bicone beads
(4) OOAK bead "clusters" created by me, bordered by Ethiopian bicones, studded with (8-10)mm carnelian nuggets and tribal seed beads.
(6) sterling wire-wrapped, genuine, antique, (10x14)mm Mali wedding beads.
Length over all is 24 1/2", including the textured, slightly oxidized sterling silver hook clasp.
